Before you travel

Acclimatising to the altitude in Cusco

Cusco sits at 3,400 m above sea level. During the first 48 hours it is common to feel short of breath, get headaches and sleep poorly. Arranging the itinerary from lower to higher altitude reduces these symptoms considerably.

    A half-day afternoon route with no physical demand.

    Day two — Sacred Valley

    The valley sits 600 to 900 m below Cusco, which aids acclimatisation.

    Day three onwards — high altitude

    Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain and the glacial lakes.

Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036 m above sea level. We recommend scheduling it from your third day in Cusco onwards. It is the highest point in the whole catalogue, and it is reached and returned from in a single day.
