Before you travel
Acclimatising to the altitude in Cusco
Cusco sits at 3,400 m above sea level. During the first 48 hours it is common to feel short of breath, get headaches and sleep poorly. Ordering the itinerary from lower to higher altitude reduces these symptoms considerably.
- 01
Day one — city tour
A half-day afternoon route with no physical demand.
- 02
Day two — Sacred Valley
The valley sits 600 to 900 m below Cusco, which aids acclimatisation.
- 03
Day three onwards — high altitude
Machu Picchu, the glacial lakes or the start of a trek.
Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036 m above sea level. We recommend scheduling it from your third day in Cusco onwards.
Small groups
Maximum 16 people on full-day tours and 14 on treks.
